A Memorial Day message from Florida Veterans for Common sense President, Gene Jones.

Take the time to remember and honor them. Think about the contributions they could have made had they not died in war.

Memorial Day is a time to reflect and honor the memory of American service members who died fighting for our country.

This Memorial Day, we are involved in a war of choice. Our president started it with a surprise attack while negotiations for peace were underway. Service members have died as a result.

Sadly, many Americans won’t reflect on the sacrifice of the fallen. Instead, Memorial Day activities may carry a message of militaristic and hubristic nationalism, perhaps even a call for more war and more death.

We honor them for making the ultimate sacrifice. They followed orders.

Why did they die? If we are honest with ourselves, there is no satisfactory answer. They, just as many of our family members and friends, may have died in an unjust and unnecessary war.

In the present war, diplomacy, negotiations, and patience would have more likely achieved the declared military objectives. Why did our president choose war and death?

This Memorial Day, let us rededicate ourselves to peace.

The highest honor we can give the fallen is to stop needless wars so that more brave service members do not die.
