Patriotism Bitter Sweet on this Flag Day

The week of Flag Day, June 14, American flags are everywhere and I find myself reflecting on patriotism and pride. My husband and I proudly stood in front of the American flag as we took the oath of office. We are patriots who proudly served our country.

But, under the oppression of “anti-woke,” White Christian Nationalism, guns, hate, desire for control of our bodies, and voter suppression, I question my pride in America.

Florida is leading the fight for a single-minded culture by undermining educators and healthcare providers, and destroying science, history, economics, and the environment.

I feel pain for our patriotic military members who are female, minority, LGBTQ, and of different faith who equally protect our freedom. They are under threat by the country they serve.

I am shocked by greedy politicians who try to destroy American’s democracy, empathy, understanding, and inclusion for money and power.

I am a patriotic veteran who loves my country but is feeling less proud this Flag Day.

I agree totally. To make it worse (if it can be) the American Flag has been coopted by MAGA supporters and has become their symbol. When I see a house with an American flag flying in front of it I don’t feel pride, just concern that this may be the residence of another supporter of right wing extremism.

My feelings as well. Restoring true patriotism to our country may take a generation or more. For me it “My country, right and wrong, and I’ll do all I can to correct the wrong.”
