Thomas G. “Skip” Hannon departed an interesting and joyous life, without fear on May 22, 2018.
He was born on August 10, 1930 and raised in The Bronx, in the Greatest City, to Thomas G. and Lillian B. (Neuweiler) where lifelong friendships were established. He attended Public Elementary School 68, after graduated from Mount Saint Michael Academy. His first job was with Park & Tilford Liquor Co. in Manhattan.
Skip was drafted in 1951 into the U.S. Army and served thirteen months on the front lines during the Korean War, where he was wounded and awarded The Purple Heart. His wartime experiences are published in his book; “Land of the Morning Calm”.
In 1956 he married Patricia Scollard, his true love and they later bought their home in Carmel, New York where they lived for forty four years. Mr. Hannon is survived by his best friend, wife, Patricia and two beloved children, son, James (Joan) and daughter, Catherine (Annabel); Joan’s sons, Seth and Nicholas Cassell; several nephews and nieces, as well as grand nephews and grand- nieces and many revered new and lifelong, widely eclectic, group of friends. He is predeceased by his dear sister, Jean MacIlvane.
Following his service in Korea Mr. Hannon worked in the finance and banking industry, and was employed for forty years in the insurance investigation and safety field for Retail Credit Co. and as Senior Safety Engineer for Empire Insurance Group .Thomas was Secretary of Westchester Chapter, of the American Society of Safety Engineers.
Upon retiring to Bradenton in 1998 he became a volunteer with The American Red Cross, a tutor for Manatee Literacy Council, an active member of The Sierra Club, Greenpeace, Defenders of Wildlife, The Occupy Movement, Guardian member of American Civil Liberties Union, Union of Concerned Scientists, Southern Poverty Law Center and numerous other environmental and civil rights groups, as well as being involved in progressive politics in New York and Florida.
Skip was Chapter Commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Officer on Mount Vernon Condo Board of Directors, Chapter Commander of Korean War Veterans Association, Commander of Mount Vernon Veterans Club, member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans, Florida Veterans for Common Sense and was voted Manatee County Veteran of the Year for 2012/2013.
Mass for Skip will be held at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church 9:30AM Saturday, May 26, 2018. Brown & Sons Funeral Homes & Crematory 43rd Street Chapel in charge of arrangements.
