On this solemn Memorial Day, we honor and remember the brave men and women who died protecting the values we hold dear. These are not only the founding principle that all men are created equal. But, they include freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. We salute the greatest generation that fought so hard against Nazis and fascists to preserve our democracy.
As we honor the fallen, we must also remember that they fought for a reason. They fought to fulfill the promise of America. They died to preserve and extend our democracy.
Many of us have experienced the loss of a comrade, family member, or friend fighting and dying for these American principles. As we honor them today, let us also not forget that the struggle continues.
The Threat Continues
Now we see the rise in America of a hate-filled, neofascist movement that is trying to overthrow our democracy. The extremists are intent on subverting our political norms and are willing to wreck our economy to grab power.
Like those patriots before us, we will continue to fight against those who would destroy our democracy. As veterans, we will stay on the front lines following in the footsteps of those who died to create an America that upholds the principles of fairness, justice, and empathy for the less fortunate among us.
Florida Veterans for Common Sense is honored to have so many members and supporters with the courage, wisdom, and dedication to continue the fight for a better world. Thanks to your commitment our organization has outstanding solidarity that enables us to accomplish all that we do. We are active in many arenas. We work to protect our democracy, combat climate change, and support our fellow veterans.
On this Memorial Day, we remember the fallen, support the living, and strive to create a world worthy of the fallen’s sacrifices.
Spot on! As Jefferson supposedly said: “Eternal Vigilance is the Price of Liberty.”
Let us never forget.
In the realm of political discourse, progressives often find themselves engaged in debates with individuals from the opposing side. While the progressive movement is grounded in truth, it is crucial to recognize that relying solely on truth can sometimes be ineffective in changing hearts and minds. This blog post aims to shed light on the limitations of truth-based arguments and highlight the efficacy of deep canvassing tactics in fostering meaningful dialogue and driving real change.
The Limitations of Truth in Political Discourse
1. Confirmation Bias: People tend to seek out information that aligns with their pre-existing beliefs and values. When presented with facts that challenge these beliefs, individuals often experience cognitive dissonance, which can lead to a defensive reaction. Consequently, truth-based arguments may be met with resistance rather than acceptance.
2. Dunning-Kruger Effect: This psychological phenomenon suggests that individuals with limited knowledge or expertise in a particular domain tend to overestimate their understanding and ability. When confronted with complex issues, individuals may dismiss expert opinions and rely on their own misconceptions or biased information. Consequently, presenting truth alone may not be sufficient to sway those who are influenced by the Dunning-Kruger effect.
3. Emotional Appeals: Human beings are not purely rational beings. Emotions play a significant role in shaping beliefs and opinions. Appeals to emotion, such as fear, anger, or empathy, can often be more compelling than factual arguments alone. While truth is essential, it is crucial to connect with individuals on an emotional level to foster empathy and create lasting change.
The Power of Deep Canvassing
Deep canvassing is an alternative approach to political discourse that focuses on personal connections and empathetic conversations rather than simply presenting facts. It involves engaging in meaningful, open-ended conversations with individuals, actively listening to their perspectives, and fostering understanding. Here’s why deep canvassing tactics work:
1. Building Relationships: Deep canvassing enables the establishment of personal connections and rapport between individuals. By engaging in empathetic conversations, we create a safe space for open dialogue, allowing people to express their concerns and experiences. This connection can help bridge the gap between opposing sides and create a foundation for dialogue.
2. Empathy and Understanding: Deep canvassing encourages listening without judgment. By actively hearing the concerns and experiences of others, we demonstrate empathy and validate their feelings. This approach helps individuals feel seen and understood, fostering an environment conducive to growth and openness.
3. Personal Stories and Narratives: Sharing personal stories can be a powerful tool in deep canvassing. By relating lived experiences, individuals can connect emotionally with the issues at hand. Stories have the potential to transcend intellectual disagreements and evoke empathy, making it more likely for people to question their preconceived notions.
4. Framing Issues Effectively: Deep canvassing allows for a nuanced exploration of issues by considering the values and perspectives of individuals. By tailoring messages to resonate with the specific concerns of others, we can frame progressive policies in a way that aligns with their values and priorities, making it easier to find common ground.
So, while truth is an essential component of political discourse, relying solely on factual arguments can often be insufficient in changing hearts and minds. The limitations of confirmation bias, the Dunning-Kruger effect, and the power of emotional appeals demonstrate the need for alternative approaches. Deep canvassing tactics offer a valuable tool for progressives to engage in meaningful conversations, build relationships, foster empathy, and create lasting change. By prioritizing personal connections and understanding, we can move beyond truth alone and cultivate an environment where productive dialogue and transformative progress can flourish.
The FLVCS came to be because you recognized a wrong and spoke out. Vilified at the time but in time proved to be correct. You recognize and pay tribute to those who have served but are vigilant so no one will be asked to defend the indefensible.
For everything you do, thank you 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Thank you for this message and reminder of what we must stand for; and for honoring all of those who sacrificed so much to ensure democracy endures. I am proud that we have this group that supports our country through principles and action.
Thank you for this important message on Memorial Day 2023. We appreciate the comments from others too. May we always remember our democratic values for the good of all and our nation and know the most effective and empathetic ways to reach out and to share them with others. May we preserve, protect, and build our democratic values for all.
