A Florida Veterans for Common Sense, Inc. Resolution urging Congress to propose an amendment to the United States Constitution to overturn the Supreme Court’s egregious decision granting corporations personhood.
WHEREAS, the states adopted and ratified the United States Constitution to protect free speech and other rights of people, not corporations, and
WHEREAS, corporations are not people but instead are legal fictions created by the law of states and nations, and
WHEREAS, a misuse of the First Amendment for the benefit of corporations reached an extreme conclusion in a closely divided decision by the United States Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United v. Federal 19 Election Commission, 130 S. Ct 876 (2010), and
WHEREAS, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission overturned longstanding precedent restricting corporate expenditures which now have the effect of unfairly influencing elections, and
WHEREAS, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, unleashed a torrent of corporate money into political processes unmatched by political expenditures in United States history, and
WHEREAS, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, purports to invalidate state laws and even provisions of state constitutions restricting corporate expenditures to influence elections, and
WHEREAS, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, presents a serious and direct threat to our republican form of government, and
WHEREAS, the Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission results in national security threat as corporations can be controlled by foreign corporations, foreign countries, foreign individuals, or even terrorists, or terrorist organizations.
WHEREAS, Article V of the United States Constitution empowers and obligates the people and states of the United States of America to use the constitutional amendment process to correct egregiously wrong decisions of the United States Supreme Court which go to the heart of our democracy, and
WHEREAS, the people and states of the United States have strengthened the nation and preserved liberty and equality for all by using the amendment process throughout our history and by using the amendment process to reverse other erroneous Supreme Court decisions,
NOW, THEREFORE, Be It Resolved by Florida Veterans for Common Sense, Inc.,
That the Congress of the United States is urged to enact and send to the states for ratification a constitutional amendment to reverse Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, and to restore the constitutional rights of the people to fair elections, specifying that Corporations are not human beings and corporate money to influence elections is not constitutionally protected speech.
