Florida Veterans for Common Sense was formed in Sarasota in 2002, during the run-up to the Iraq War. As the drumbeat for war intensified, three Vietnam-era veterans (all attorneys practicing in Sarasota) questioned the government’s position that the war would be short and easy.
Like the arguments that promoted the Vietnam War, those for the Iraq invasion regarding “weapons of mass destruction” and ties to al-Qaida appeared to be baseless propaganda. Moreover, Osama bin Laden and his criminal al-Qaida gang were in Afghanistan, not Iraq.
We are a nonpartisan group and have been politically active on matters of national security ever since.
Recently, Florida Veterans for Common Sense has taken the position that assault weapons should be banned for use by the general public. We are combat veterans who served in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq. We have experience with these types of weapons. We know the consequences of using them.
