Florida Veterans for Common Sense (FLVCS) Endorses Charlie Crist for Governor. FLVCS is  a  nonpartisan veterans advocacy group. From our  founding we have stood up for democratic principles, the rule of law, and the promise of America. In addition, we recognize climate change is a national security threat.

We are  nonpartisan because we are not aligned with a political party and can endorse candidates in any party. 

We rarely endorse candidates. However during the primaries, we communicated with both the Democratic and Republican candidates for governor. The only campaign willing to work with our Environmental Working Group to develop climate policies based on science and sound economics was Charlie Crist’s.

Alignment on Climate Positions

On the climate front, we advocate for policies that encourage the addition of less heat-trapping gases to the atmosphere by using less energy and transitioning to zero- emission energy sources, such as solar and wind. And we advocate for the removal of carbon from the atmosphere through reforestation and effective soil management. The Crist campaign aligns with our positions.

Florida is one of the largest emitters of carbon in the country. It also has some of the highest electricity rates in the nation. Both situations can be corrected with good public policy.

Crist’s opponent has done little to correct these deficiencies. Unlike most states, Florida has not set standards for non-carbon emitting power generation. Also, Florida law makes us dependent on monopoly power companies when we could have cheaper electricity if businesses, communities, schools, houses of worship, and residences were allowed to develop microgrids powered by solar. Shouldn’t we have the freedom to choose? 

Crist Supports the Constitution

On the democracy front, Floridians have a stark choice. We can either choose a GOP MAGA extremist for governor or a candidate who supports the Constitution, the rule of law, and democratic norms. 

We describe GOP MAGA extremists as those who refuse to acknowledge that President Biden won the 2020 election. In addition, they will not acknowledge that the January 6 insurrection was a MAGA coup attempt to prevent certification of the election. Many also support additional extreme positions. For instance, some MAGA supporters assert that state legislatures, not voters, can decide who wins elections. Many also tolerate violence, or the threat of violence, to advance their movement as evidenced by January 6. Many reject science and the national security threat from climate change. In short, in our view the MAGA GOP is a movement that threatens our Constitutional Republic, the rule of law, and rational public policy on climate change.

We expect all candidates to stand up for democratic values and to understand, and act, on the threat posed by climate change.
