Florida Veterans for Common Sense Inc. (FLVCS) asks our elected officials and candidates for office to support Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) in all local, state, and federal elections.
How Ranked Choice Voting Works
RCV, also known as Instant-Runoff Voting, is a simple method of voting which allows voters to rank candidates on a ballot in their order of preference rather than choosing only one candidate. By ranking candidates in an election with more than two persons on a ballot, a race is decided in one voting round with no runoff. Thus, increasing voter participation and saving taxpayer dollars. Here are videos explaining how it works.
Additional Benefits
RCV has many other benefits. It allows candidates to focus on issues by reducing negative and partisan campaigning. It eliminates the spoiler effect. Further, RCV minimizes the influence of big money and it encourages more potential candidates with diverse views to run for office.
Ranked Choice Voting in Use
RCV has already been used in many local and state jurisdictions and has been used successfully for many years in many foreign countries. It is a proven concept which makes democracy more viable and meaningful. In 2007, the City of Sarasota voters passed a referendum adopting RCV for city elections. However, the Florida Secretary of State refuses to certify it.
Florida Veterans for Common Sense urges all office holders and candidates to support the implementation of Ranked Choice Voting in all elections.
